2021.12.05 11:52 Jumpy_Inflation_7648 The Problem with Writing Human Characters in Kaiju Films.
What makes Kaiju movies unique from other monster movies is that the human characters have significantly less agency. In regular monster movies like Alien, Jaws, Jurassic Park, and Predator, the human characters have to deal with human-sized threats ranging from great white sharks, to dinosaurs, and to humanoid aliens. This makes it easier for the characters to have intimate interactions with the creatures, thus making it easier for them to dictate the events of the story.
In Kaiju films however, there is a significant size difference between the monsters and humans. Since kaiju are usually over 200 feet tall, there are only so many interactions they can have with human characters in a film setting. These include the monsters briefly locking eyes with the humans, the humans being carried by the monsters, and the humans riding them. The human characters are also usually relegated to being bystanders who have little bearing on the events of the story. The kaiju are the ones that move the story forward due to their immense sizes. Because of this, the monster side of the story and the human side of the story feel disconnected from each other.
I believe this is what makes balancing human and monster stories and writing compelling human characters so difficult. How do make characters that can’t really interact with the monsters compelling?

2021.12.05 11:52 ND8D A no code ham works a CW contest.
Once in a blue moon I get a good clear weekend to play radio on, and as luck would have it, this weekend was the ARRL 160 meter contest. Excellent, I thought. I have a 160M add on trap for my vertical I've been meaning to try out, and this will give me motivation to actually install it and tune up.
Well, that add on trap was.... troublesome at best, It would resonate at a super LOW resistance, and throw off every other band on the vertical. I wasn't ready to raise and lower a 50' vertical repeatedly to get all the tuning stubs for 80-10 back into spec, and still have a basically unworkable 160M antenna.
So down comes the trap, the vertical tunings for 80-10 go right back into whack, and I need a plan B.
Fortunately when I put my tower a couple weeks ago, I put two pulleys and rope loops at the 40' level for flags, decoration, and most importantly: dipoles! Unfortunately wire ain't cheap these days but I have a large reel of 16GA stranded in the barn. I grab one of these from the old junk bin, a few insulators, and the 200' measuring tape, and I get to cutting. Within 20 minutes I have the beginnings of a dipole up the tower, and the ends tied off to my barn and a neighbors pine tree. I did text my neighbor to tell him I'm up to my nerd stuff again and that there's a wire in his tree, he's cool with all that. A few back and forths with the antenna analyzer and the wire snips, and we're tuned. Walking a 160M dipole end to end several times will get your step count up for the day.
Okay great, the 160M dipole is up, resonant around 1880 with a decent bandwidth (for 160), need to have a quick dinner with some friends that was arranged a while ago and then it's contest time!
After dinner and before turning on the rig I pull up the ARRL website to get a quick glance at the rules and exchange. The FIRST line on the page: " For Amateurs worldwide to exchange information with W/VE amateurs on 160-meter CW. " CW? CW!?..... balls.
Up until this point I had no idea the ARRL 160 was a CW only contest. My bad for not looking into that a few days ago, I just saw ARRL 160 on the WA7BNM contest calendar stopped reading apparently.
Well folks, I am NOT a CW operator by any stretch, despite being a ham for over 10 years at this point, and having a collection of straight keys because...well... I never got the hang of it. Despite a concentrated effort in 2015 to train myself on LCWO, I was never able to get a grip on CW QSO's. The dit's and dah's always blended together after 5 or 6 letters, and my past attempts at CW contacts have always ended in "QSP QSB SRY OM 73".
I can however, usually identify strings of characters (Thanks to LCWO's training methods), which I suppose that's what call signs are, and usually these contests have short simple exchanges. I decided, why not, let's give it a try. I had some training wheels though. On the computer I put up a morse chart and an audio waterfall so I could "read back" characters if my head ran behind my ears. I only ran S&P (search and pounce), often lingering on a station for a few of their calls so I could be sure of their call sign and perhaps catch another one of their contacts so I could hear their section ahead of time. On the transmit side, as an S&P station, 99% of my transmissions were ND8D and 5NN OH, I practiced that a few times at a higher speed so I wouldn't feel like I'm dragging these operators down. I decided to use my Kent TP1-B paddle.
Slowly but surely, I was able to put a contact in the log, then another, then another, and it kept going. It WAS slow at first, but after a dozen contacts, the training wheels were slowly starting to lift and stay off the ground. I was able to identify calls and sections the first if not second time around, and most importantly, I was having fun! Over the weekend in the late evenings (and some odd morning and mid day q's) I was able to put 130 QSOs in the log. I think my CW ear is vastly better for it too.
I always liked phone contesting because there's an energy and excitement there, especially when tracking down multipliers. This weekend's contest gave me the same energy behind the beeps and boops. After this experience I'll definitely pay more attention to the CW contests.

2021.12.05 11:52 BIGendBOLT Why is learnjapanese.moe saying Matt had their site taken down?
Posting here in case my post in refold gets taken down (not like it matters since refold basically runs this sub too)
I like and respect Matt (maybe not too sure now) but what I've seen from what's happening in the rest of the immersion community is pretty concerning.
If you don't know apparently the situation is that someone got ahold of a video of an interview Matt decided not to upload (supposedly because it painted djt in too good a light and wasn't positive enough towards refold) which had Matt on video saying some pretty unsavory stuff that didn't paint him in the best light and Matt copy struck the video and only after the fact decided to try and buy the rights to said video. He's also been accused of getting said guys channel taken down.
And that brings us to LearnJapanese.moe which many of us are fond of and on the discord they're saying Matt had the site taken down. Where do they fit in to all of this?

2021.12.05 11:52 TheDownWithCisBus The real reason you shouldn’t tell someone they’re an egg
They might be trans and closeted
What? It’s a weird thing to do? It’s bad to assume that you know more about how someone identifies than them? No, this is the only reason
/uj yeah all the other reasons are good reasons to not try to crack someone’s egg but like I’m closeted and someone is trying to ‘crack my egg’ (and being far too conspicuous about it) and it’s just very uncomfortable and pretty worrying.

2021.12.05 11:52 Author_in_Progress (Spoilers Main) The show was overrated
As an adaptation, I don’t like it. And as a completely independent thing, its good but not ridiculously so. No, I’m not referring to the last few seasons, awful as they are. I’m talking about from start to end.
I understand the Others would be nearly impossible to depict how they’re described. But to me, the show’s version just looks terrible. Cartoony, if I’m being honest.
You remember the undead girl in the opening? I’d have preferred if the Others all just looked like her. Deathly pale, living corpses with icy eyes and expressionless faces— yet not so decayed that they look like rotting zombies. Far more creepy than the White Walkers. And yeah, I know it’s not book accurate. But I think combining the others with their undead thralls would be the best choice. Maybe have the big bad Other be an actual ice monster, but don’t reveal him until the very last battle. Then you keep the mystery hidden behind a legion of the undead.
And on that note, the show completely missed the horror vibes of the books, but that a whole thing I don’t have the room to rant about.
Moving on, I kinda hate the TV Starks.
Robb (while I do like him) felt too much like a Disney prince, I half expected him to break out into song on several occasions. Jon is mopey sad boy with crippling constipation, and frankly I wish the other recruits had cut his throat. Sansa was convincing as a stuck up brat, but her talents ended then and there. Arya— alright, Arya was solid while a kid. But I can’t stand her after a certain point. Bran was good too in the beginning, I loved the scene where he smiles at his father, just conveyed a lot. But I couldn’t care less about him otherwise. Rickon was present, so there’s that.
I love Sean Bean, even though I don’t think he was quite perfect for Ned. And Cat was okay, even if she was nothing like her book counterpart.
Stannis and the whole Dragonstone gang were great, honestly. Great performances all around, and close enough to the books. Unfortunately the show didn’t know what to do with Stannis so they just destroyed his entire character. Yet the power of fanservice managed to keep Davos alive.
Charles Dance was the best part of the show IMO. And I actually prefer him to his book counterpart. So good on you, show.
But the other Lannisters are very different from their book counterparts. They really don’t line up well. but their performances were amazing overall. So as an adaption, not great on this front. But as it’s own thing, perfect.
The show really was bad at adapting it’s characters, wasn’t it? I’ll summarize the rest: Renly and Loras went from Achilles and Patroclus to— well, you know. Littlefinger went from scumbag hiding below layers of humor, charm, and sophistication, to just a regular scumbag. Sandor went from a literary gothic hero to a middle old guy who swears and makes puns about penises. And Robert, our tragic and terribly flawed, emotionally twisted king, became a meme.
I know this is cynical as hell. And maybe I sound ridiculous. Maybe I’m just tired of waiting for WoW and have devolved to nitpicking. But let me say that I really did like parts of the show. It had many moments of greatness that made me feel.
That being said, I do believe it’s an overrated show. There was so much cringe. And really, remove the boobs and the preexisting fan base of the books. Do this and I think it would have flopped harder (or softer?) than Edmure’s fish. But that’s just me.

2021.12.05 11:52 struggling-magikarp What questions do you ask yourself when/after you (are) read(ing) a book, to deepen your understanding of it?
The past few years I've going through my fiction like a speed train, while I understand the (superficial) story and plot just fine, I feel like I am missing out on some deeper understanding of the story. I want to get more out of my reading again, aside from amusement and escapism. For some stories this comes easy, as they just click with me and the story parallels my life. Bu other stories have more to offer than what I take away from it, and I regret not taking that opportunity.
What questions help you to get more out of your fiction? What aspects of the book do you pay attention to? In what ways do you try to learn from the stories you read?
I was thinking about understanding of things like overarching themes, filosophy and morals used in the book, decision made by characters and their outcomes, personality of characters, and so on.
