2021.12.04 16:56 Brewster_The_Pigeon I love how Pikmin gives in-depth and in-universe analysis of the evolution and biology of the creatures within its world.
Pikmin is such a unique series for a lot of reasons, but one such reason is the notes written about the creatures on the planet. In Pikmin 2, a Piklopedia is written by both Olimar and Louie, categorizing all the enemies and plants found throughout the game. Olimar writes about the biology of the creature, while Louie writes about the best way to prepare the creature in a meal. Here are some of my favorite examples:
Creeping Chrysanthemum Taraxacum rovinia (Olimar):
"Like Pikmin, the creeping chrysanthemum is a member of a group of creatures with ambulatory root structures. This creature is known as a "mimic," but because it is actually a form of plant, this label is not entirely accurate. For unknown reasons, the creeping chrysanthemum's mimicry does not fool Pikmin, perhaps because they share a similar heritage. It relies on preying upon other creatures to provide sustenance, so it has no need of leaves for photosynthesis. Generally speaking, the role of plants within an ecosystem is as a producer species, and thus plants are generally found at the bottom of the food pyramid. However, on this strange planet the line between producer plants and consumer plants is blurred."
“When thinly sliced, this predator's sizeable bulb makes a sumptuous pizza topping.”
Swooping Snitchbugs Scarpanica kesperens (Olimar):
"The scarpanids originally lived on the ground, sporting poorly developed vestigial wings. This species developed enlarged antennae that can be used as makeshift wings. Scarpanids are attracted by the sight of large groups of Pikmin in cavalry formation and will swoop down to seize them. However, scarpanids do not eat Pikmin, and they will drop any seized Pikmin after a short time. The reason for this behavior is unknown, but I look forward to future research in the area."
“Remove the wings, marinate a well-marbled steak for several hours in a chipotle marinade, then charbroil to perfection.”
Fiery Bulblax Oculus vulcanus (Olimar):
"Bodily excretions of a highly flammable waxy substance interact with the cell structure of this grub-dog's skin, causing a chemical reaction that produces extremely high temperatures. The skin benefits from a spongy cell structure that diffuses the surface heat, protecting the creature's inner organs. Due to the astonishing amount of heat produced by this beast, it should be observed with great caution."
Louie's recipe for the Fiery Bulblax:
“No stove? No problem! This sizzling beast practically cooks itself. Remember to thoroughly extinguish the steaks prior to eating.”
Its really there specifically for hyper nerds like me who think for hours about things like this. The game gives hints towards the biology of creatures, but not entirely - Olimar is smart but there's a lot of research yet to be done, and he fully admits this throughout the Piklopedia whenever his knowledge is lacking. Nintendo put so much effort into thinking about these creatures, these obstacles in a video game, and thinking of why they act in the way they do and how they developed their features.
For example, the Blowhog family comprises of the Fiery Blowhog, the Watery Blowhog, the Puffy Blowhog and the Withering Blowhog. All of these creatures are descendants of pigs, with a common element of all of them being an organ capable of creating a phosphorous compound that can be expelled out of the snout.
Fiery Blowhogs produce a compound that ignites on contact with air, hence their name. Watery Blowhogs spray a liquid rather than fire - this is simply because they lack the genes to produce the phosphorus and thus only spray nonflammable liquid as a defense mechanism. This results in death to non-Blue Pikmin if not saved due to the liquid sticking to Pikmin, suffocating them.
Puffy Blowhogs' gas-producing organ evolved to use it's inner hydrogen to float, opting to float away to avoid predation rather than using flames or gas. The Withering Blowhog is a variant whose gas causes Pikmin to lose their flowers.
These enemies were made for gameplay purposes. The devs wanted a fire-based enemy for X location to encourage the player to use more Red Pikmin, or an aquatic creature to threaten the player's blue Pikmin. Then they went the extra mile and justified the biology of their creatures in a way that actually makes sense for the most part - and it's amazing for nerds like me. There's no biological explanation for Goombas or Dekus, they just exist and that's okay, but I love knowing things like this. It occupies my mind so often, thinking about all the possible creatures for Pikmin, thinking of how the Pikmin themselves developed, it's perfect for super fans and I hella respect Nintendo for putting this much effort into the writing of Pikmin.

2021.12.04 16:56 NotYoCheeeez Can I get some thoughts on this Gaming laptop?
Lenovo Legion Y540 15.6" Gaming Laptop - Black (Intel Core i5-9300HF/512GB SSD/8GB RAM/GTX 1660Ti)
$950 CAD or $740 USD
Originally I was going to get a Rtx 3060 or higher gaming laptop versus a gaming pc to take the cheaper route. Then I saw this, and I know the 1660 ti isn’t quite as good as the 3060 but they are relatively close according to benchmark. Has good reviews, benchmarks on YT and google shows it can run most demanding games on high for 60+ fps and even though the i5 9300HF is outdated and lacking compared to most processors used for gaming nowadays, I’m wondering if anyone can give me their thoughts on this gaming laptop based off its price for its specs and if it is what I should go for versus the 3060 which would jump another $300-$500, like is that really worth it?

2021.12.04 16:56 exuuro So, new killer is pretty trash
All you have to do is shift+W. She is extremely predictable at loops when she sets up the crow since you have to load it, and then it is visible anyway. Plus if the survivor runs into it, then it turns to a swarm. She has weak af 1v4, all it takes is for one survivor to just keep running from you then it turns into a shift+w catchup race. They can fuck around a lil bit at loops and then shift+w again. All the while, gens are exploding as she has no real pressure there, while in a chase particularly. Yeah, it's neat to be able to find survivors at gens cross map but the problem in this game is not really finding people, as long as you are not on the bottom end of the ranks. Problem is 1v4, gen speeds and chase times and she sucks dick.

2021.12.04 16:56 WildlyBewildering I think I may have been the recipient of some unexpected holiday beneficence.
My immediate family is spread out across the USA, a bit, but we normally try to get together for Christmas, which is also our Mother's birthday. This year, most of us will be gathering, but one of the siblings (my eldest brother) and his wife will not be able to join us. His wife cannot travel because of a medical condition, and her mother passed away earlier this year, so (for that and other reasons) he will be staying with her, on the other side of the country.
Because there are so many of us, we pick names each year, so each of us only needs to buy one present for one other person in the group (spouses/SOs buy each other additional things, generally). It means we can get one person something nice, rather than trying to come up with 5-10 presents for all the various people in attendance. This year, I picked my eldest brother's name.
His wish list had a variety of things on it, including a very nice pair of slippers. How slippers can cost this much, I don't know, but he wanted them, and I wanted him to have the nice slippers. I went to the company's website on Monday, and they were having a 'cyber Monday' sale! I didn't think too hard about why slippers would be on sale for cyber Monday, I just called myself lucky (and used the $ saved to get him another item from his list).
I ordered the slippers, to be sent to his address, and went on with my day.
An hour or two went by, and I had a sudden, creeping suspicion that I had ordered the wrong color. I checked his wish list, then checked my order... I got the size right, but had missed the color he wanted. Drat. I immediately tried to get onto the site's 'chat' help, to see if I could quick-change the color before they shipped. After waiting on a '2 minute hold' on the chat function for almost 10 minutes, I dug up their help number, and called in.
I waited a couple of minutes before a rep answered. Let's call him 'Ed' because it's easy to type. Ed told me that he was sorry, but because of the high volume sales happening that day he wasn't able to switch the order - the best he could do was place another order for me, for the right color slippers, and send a return label for the incorrect pair.
I wasn't happy about this - it hadn't been very long, and I was mad at myself for not checking more carefully when placing the order, and I'm not wealthy or anything, so I wasn't prepared to place another order right that second. While I was waffling, Ed said 'Huh! Look at that!' and I asked what was up. He said 'Oh - I just saw that you're in Chicago - I'm from Chicago.' He said it gave him a little flash of nostalgia.
I thanked him for his time - said I wasn't sure what I would do, but yeah - send the return label, just in case. He asked if I could stay on the line a moment "The phone's going to start ringing again as soon as we hang up, and I want to just finish making this note, here". I said sure, but I'd need to put him on speakerphone and get back to work. He was fine with that, so I put him on speaker and we chatted a bit while he finished up what he was doing. When he was done, we said our goodbyes.
I thought about it, and - especially given the rough past couple of years, and the fact that he can't join us - I didn't want to be responsible for my brother receiving a mildly disappointing present. I know - it's not a HUGE deal, but I wanted him to receive what he actually wanted and asked for, so later that night I got back on the site and ordered the right color slippers to be delivered to him. I figured I'd send him the return label for the wrong ones and worst case scenario, if he were to forget to return them or something... Well, then he's got two comfy pairs of slippers and I'm out a little extra $, but I'll manage.
A couple days later, I got an email from the vendor, saying that my order couldn't be processed because of missing payment information or something. I logged on to check, and saw that the first order I placed had been cancelled... The second was in process.
I have no proof, but I think Ed circled back and cancelled the wrong one for me, when he was able. I could be wrong - but I used the same info for both orders, so it seems likely, and it's the option that makes me smile - that he remembered, and cared enough, to go back and spend time he didn't HAVE to, to save me a little worry.
Thank you, "Ed', and happy holidays!
