2021.11.30 08:33 Elicander A small, improv-heavy RPG using books as the random element

A couple of years ago, u/jackrosetree made a post in the RPGdesign subreddit encouraging others to sketch out RPGs that used books instead of dice. While my response didn't quite match the prompt, the idea has been stewing in the back of my mind, and earlier this year I wrote down a first draft of the rules, and ran a playtest. The playtest raised some issues that I've been working, but I realised that I wasn't making much progress, and thought it might be good to get some more eyes on the project and maybe get some new angles or ideas to work from.
The intent is for this RPG to be fun, silly and with low stakes. I imagine it being used for one-shots, if a RPG group needs a break from their ordinary gaming, or maybe one of the members cancelled with short notice. All feedback is welcome, but I do have some specific feedback requests that I will post below the rules draft.
RULES DRAFT ------------------------------
The Library of all Stories (Work in progress)
The players are librarians at the Library of all Stories. When receiving a new shipment of books some volumes were mixed up, and you don’t know which section of the library to sort them into. You have gathered after hours to figure it out, by going through the stories one by one.
Number of players: 3-7, recommended 4.
Preparation: Every player needs to bring a number of books equal to the number of players, in a language all players can understand. Fictional books are recommended, but any book could theoretically work.
Choose a player to start as the Head Librarian. The Head Librarian chooses one of their own books. The other players choose a book from another player’s pile, such that a book is chosen from each player’s pile.
Every player turns to a random page of their book. Quickly glancing at their page, the Head Librarian figures out where the story begins, by finding something on the page to inspire them. This could be a named location, or a general situation or place.
Whenever a player is meant to find something on the page in a book, unless the rules specify otherwise, players are encouraged to let their imaginations fill in the blanks. It usually makes for more interesting stories if players pick the first thing their eyes spot, and not worry too much about how it fits in with everything else in the story or what else is on the page right now.
After the Head Librarian has described where the story begins, the other players find a character on their page and describe their character. If what the character finds on the page is a vocation or similar, make sure to give the character a name.
After characters have been introduced, players other than the Head Librarian find something on their page to describe the relationship between two characters other than their own. If there are only three players, the Head Librarian describes the relationship between the two characters. This step might require more associative work to establish. For example, if your eyes fall on the word “restaurant”, maybe that means that the characters are coworkers at a restaurant; or they’re currently on a date at said restaurant; or one of them is trying to buy the restaurant from the other.
The player on the left of the Head Librarian finds the first verb on their page and says it. The next player finds the first adjective on their page and says it. The next player finds the first noun on their page and says it. The Head Librarian adjusts the grammar as needed, and forms the three words into a sentence. This is the goal of the characters.
After this, the story begins. The characters are at the location the Head Librarian described earlier, and want to achieve the goal that was stated. The players control their characters, and the Head Librarian controls the environment and additional characters as needed.
The pacing of the story is decided by the Head Librarian by deciding when the beginning of the story transitions into the middle, and when the middle transitions into the end. A good rule of thumb is to transition to the next part when the conversation about what is going on in the story is dying down. The beginning of the story is usually concluded when the character sets off on their quest. The middle of the story is usually concluded when it is clear how the characters reach the end. The end of the story is the conclusion, where it becomes clear if the characters achieve or fail their goal. The goal can be achieved by all of the characters, none of them, or a subset of them, depending on how the story develops.
When the Head Librarian decides to transition the story, they announce it, and describe the scene for the next part of the story by describing what is going on. The Head Librarian may change scenery when the story transitions, if the narrative calls for it. The Head Librarian may also decide that time passes between the different stages, or to only focus on a single part of a much greater process in the narrative. If so, make this clear when describing the scene.
After the end is finished, when you know whether the characters achieve their goal or not, every player votes whether the story is FACT or FICTION. After the vote, choose a new Head Librarian and repeat the process until every player has been Head Librarian.
END OF RULES DRAFT ------------------
Feedback requests:

  1. Due to me wanting to keep the text short and not overly technical, some aspects of the rules are vaguely written, for example when you assign the relationship to two other characters. Given the low stakes I don't see a problem with different groups resolving the vagueness differently, but please let me know if you think the rules are too vague or confusing in any regard.
  2. The fact or fiction vote felt very arbitrary in the playtest, and players were confused as to what they should base their decision on. I don't want there to be an emphasis on this vote, because the focus of the RPG is meant to be the short individual stories, and not on the metalevel of the librarians, but I also don't want the metalevel to be pointless, because I do want there to be some closure to the session at the end. I am planning to use the results of the tallied votes to accomplish this, but haven't decided exactly how yet. Essentially my current dilemma is making something matter, but not too much.
  3. Finding and adjective in order to for the prompt proved to be surprisingly problematic, partially due to players struggling more with what is an adjective compared to nouns and verbs, and partially due to adjectives being more rare (might be accidental with the books we used). I'm unsure how to fix this. It did really add something that there were three parts to the goal, because that is when often hilarious incompatibilites happen. Using just a verb and a noun I think would often create more reasonable sentences, and the ridiculousness of the goals was a lot of fun.
  4. I'm not super pleased with the story progression system. While the structure of beginning, middle and end worked fine, I might need to tweak the descriptions. If anyone has other ideas on how to structure this section that would be appreciated. I've considered the hero's journey, but twelve parts seem excessive.

2021.11.30 08:33 DarkChocoBurger Why does creating a new head of faith title under a liege following a faith that considers us evil automatically give the liege a title revocation reason?

Case in point: I am a Zoroastrian ruler under an Ashari liege, and I have title revocation protection and religious rights protection as part of my feudal contract. Then I create a new Zoroastrian faith with tenets and doctrines of my choice (communion, natural primitivism, pursuit of power) with a temporal head of faith (for the sweet communion gold). I did not create the head of faith title as I didn't have two holy sites yet, and the moment I created it, the liege revokes my title (I couldn't access the modify feudal contract tool, which seems to have vanished).
This happened twice, with one resulting in a game over and one where I won the rebellion and eventually overthrew the liege.
Is there any precedent for this happening, and is there any reason behind it?

2021.11.30 08:33 Katiehemingway A Love Poem

Can I feel in you What it's like to be me? If we dance and I lead Will you show me the parts of myself Shy and feminine That long to be free?
Every touch so distinct Your thick silky hair Your rounded nose and Scratchy beard Lips like pillows
I promise I'll try to listen I promise I won't be mean
Can I feel in you What it's like to love me? If I hold you warmly And accept every part of you Will we as children meet? And play in delight Wild, well cared for, and free.
